Description:

This book on Cartilage repair is the first production in a current concepts series on cartilage related problems. It is the result of 4-year activity for the period 2006-2010 by the ESSKA Cartilage Committee. The development of treatment strategies has accelerated during the last 20 years since the introduction of cartilage tissue engineering. The best available evidence on the diagnosis and treatment of cartilage lesions has been collected and discussed by an international panel of expert orthopaedic surgeons.

It is quite well-known that cartilage when injured is difficult to repair. However, the last 20 years have been stimulating as the era of tissue engineering has opened up a stronger collaboration between basic science and clinical research in order to improve the repair of injured cartilage. In Porto, 2008, the ESSKA Cartilage Committee presented a symposium on cartilage related problems including both basic and clinical research and clinical problems. Based on those presentations and with help from DJO Publishing they decided to put together the presentations into chapters for a book on current concepts of cartilage repair.

This book is the first  in a series on cartilage related matters that hopefully will be useful for surgeons and basic scientists working on treating patients with cartilage injuries.
