UK Ultimate Frisbee team boosted by DJO support in World Championships

With knee and ankle injuries the most common in this relatively new team sport, the UK ‘Ultimate’ team were grateful for the support from Aircast and DonJoy braces during last year’s World Championships in Canada. They had their best ever showing and firmly established themselves in the top five countries in the World.

As European Champions, they were keen to prove their ability on the world stage and travelled to Vancouver with a full squad of over 120 experienced athletes and a medical team of five led by Dr Usamah Jannoun.

Competing against over 20 countries, Team GB claimed 4th place in two divisions and 5th place in three of the other four and as a result they have qualified for the World Games in Chinese Taipei this July.

Si Hill, who manages UK Ultimate explained: “Ankle injuries are reasonably common in Ultimate and in a week-long event such as the World Championships many players pick up injuries so medical support is a must-have for any squad hoping to do well.”

Dr Usamah Jannoun, their team doctor, added: “I would like to express my gratitude to DJO for their continued support of Team GB and especially for getting us through the World Championships. Aircast A60’s and DonJoy knee braces were of immense help in “patching” up our players and enabling them to compete despite their acute and chronic injuries. We could not have done so well without them.”

Ultimate is a team sport which was officially recognised by UK Sport in November 2008. Played with a flying disc (or Frisbee), it combines many elements of common team sports such as football, basketball, the main difference being the flatness of the “ball” (see www.ukultimate.com). To play at high level, athletes need a mixture of speed, strength and agility.
