DonJoy launches the World’s First Off-loading Post-op Knee Brace

This month saw a brand new type of post-op brace being introduced to the International market when we launched DonJoy’s TROM™ Adjuster – the world’s first Off-loading Post-op Knee Brace, specifically designed for cartilage repair procedures. Inspired by DonJoy’s off-loading OA technology, the ground-breaking TROM frame is the first to feature an off-loading hinge to provide a comprehensive post-operative solution following meniscal and chondral defect procedures.

DJO has combined the best of its post-op and off-loading brace technology to provide both controlled and consistent off-loading together with controlled ROM for immediate joint relief and protection post-surgery. This results in the TROM Adjuster providing a better, and potentially, faster healing environment for meniscal repairs and chondral defect procedures.

The TROM Adjuster provides a broad range of adjustable, lockable options -  answering a variety of protocols - that protect and control the motion range (the quick lock works from -10° to 90° in 10° increments). But it is the patented adjustable “hinge within a hinge” design that:

provides off-load to the affected compartment
allows adjustments to shift compressive knee joint forces from the degenerative area to the healthy compartment
turns easily to create required off-load (allows up to approximately 3° of hinge adjustability)

Add to this the Tele-Fit sliding mechanism which not only allows independent strap movement but also facilitates the fitting of cold therapy wraps/dressings and one can begin to see just how many benefits this exciting new product has to offer orthopaedic professionals.

With bracing post-op being common in most protocols after meniscal and cartilage repair  procedures,1 the TROM Adjuster can be applied immediately after surgery (or can be fitted pre-surgery for optimal ease of application) which means the knee can be completely immobilised until partial weight-bearing is allowed.

Once the patient reaches that stage, the brace also protects the injured compartment with its off-loading feature, giving surgeons the added confidence that their procedure will be protected even if the patient doesn’t comply with the protocol. This in turn, helps gain time in the therapeutic process, currently an important consideration in the healthcare industry.

Importantly, it should be noted that as the TROM Adjuster is specifically indicated for cartilage repair procedures, it should not be considered as an ‘‘alternative’’ to any of DonJoy’s other post-op braces for ACL, PCL, MCL & LCL procedures or for Patella realignment.
