DJO makes a big noise at the 2009 Motocross GP’s with brace of World Titles
DonJoy isn’t new to motorcross at the highest level. With the Armor and Defiance knee braces, DonJoy has supported the top riders for many years, as well as the MX Grand Prix races.
This year, however, DJO decided to step up its GP support and, as well as attending more Grand Prix meetings, they also introduced the benefits of COMPEX neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) alongside DonJoy’s knee braces.
Top riders started using the Compex Mi Sport muscle stimulator and with active advice from Compex’s professional therapist, Heiko Van Vliet, the riders became familiar with its benefits.
The DJO booth - showcasing both Compex and DonJoy products - attended 10 of the 15 Grand Prix across Europe which culminated with the ‘Motorcross of Nations’ in Italy in October. With double world champion Tony Cairoli as a DonJoy rider and 10 times world champion, Stefan Everts, as a ‘Face of Compex’, both brands received a lot of attention. Regular autograph sessions and Compex treatments with Cairoli and Everts at the booth drew big crowds at all 10 GP’s and fans were offered full size posters and postcards of DJO’s riders.
On the track, the riders exceeded all expectations. Despite ending his 2008 season prematurely with an ACL injury on his left knee, Cairoli clinched his third world title (and his first in the MX1 category) in the penultimate race of the 2009. In 2008, the Italian tried to ride in one more GP, but the instability and the pain forced him to stop. After knee surgery in Italy in September 2008 on his torn ACL, Tony focussed on getting his knees as strong as possible for the 2009 season. “The biggest problem was getting the medial head of my quadriceps up to strength again,” he recalls. “Starting to use the Donjoy Defiances was a big help. I regained the confidence I had lost wearing other braces. And with that confidence, I could work hard enough on my knees to build up my muscles again. Now my knees feel good, there is no sign of atrophy and I use my Compex MiSport to keep my legs as strong as possible. I now realise that strong muscles are very important for the stability of my knees. I combine the advantages of using Donjoy Defiances and Compex to achieve the best possible safety for my knees.”
To mark his victory in the World MX 1 Championship, DonJoy presented the newly crowned world champion with a set of gold-coloured DonJoy Defiance braces which he will be wearing next season. German WMA rider, Steffie Laier, then gave DJO their brace of world titles by winning the Women’s World Title. Steffi will ride with DonJoy knee braces exclusively in 2010 again. Armor MX braces are her first choice: “I will never ride without knee braces again in my life and DonJoy braces are simply the best,” says Steffi. World class riders like Steffi and Tony always ride on the edge – DonJoy knee braces provide the support and injury protection that is essential on this high performance level.
The success of the DJO riders generated a lot of attention from the big teams and riders and whereas at the beginning of the season both Compex and DonJoy were relatively unknown, by the end, they were the talk of the ‘Paddock Village’. Visit www.djomotorsports.com for more information.
