DJO Main Supporter of the IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport
We were delighted to be the main sponsor of the IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport that was held from April 7-9 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo. Much like the Games themselves, the Conference bought together multi-national teams of the brightest and best sports and medical experts, and the Conference not only addressed the problem of injuries but also discussed the prevention of other health problems associated with sports participation.
Recognised scientists and practitioners from the medical and sports worlds shared their latest findings through keynote lectures, symposia, workshops and interactive dialogue sessions. The objective was to transfer academic knowledge to the field of play in order to minimise risk factors in sport and maximise safe sports participation. The scientific programme covered a wide range of topics, featuring as many as 94 invited speakers over the three days.
The benefits of using NMES (electromuscle stimulation) were demonstrated at two lectures during the Congress. One was given by Heiko Van Vliet with Dr Helge Riepenhof, HTC Highroad's Team Doctor, and at the other Heiko was joined by Marc Herremans, the Ironman wheelchair athlete who discussed how NMES has helped him achieve so much success.
Picking one highlight would be impossible, but perhaps one of the most interesting presentations was on the subject of genetics and its possible impact on ACL injuries and Achilles Tendinopathy presented by Dr. Mike Postumous and his research team at the University of Cape Town. Another to catch a number of delegates’ attention was the opening day symposium on the female athlete triad.
The challenges associated with eating disorders, amenorrhea and osteoporosis in the “female athlete triad” were discussed and the symposium reviewed the state of research in the field, and how understanding the female athlete triad has evolved to what it is today. Always a subject that requires sensitive handling, it was good to see the IOC effecting discussion to a broad range of experts in order to create sound, healthy and competitive female athletes.
DJO Global was proud to support the IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport.
