EFOST’s 2008 Travelling Fellows Reveal All…..

The 5th EFOST Congress took place in Antalya, Turkey at the end of November in sunny weather. Delegates were keen to hear how this year’s fellowship trip had unfolded. Dr William M Wind and Dr Michael A Rauh from State University of New York at Buffalo, were still buzzing from their whistle-stop tour, which was packed full of experiences. The trip started in Belgium, moving through to Italy, France and finally Turkey.

“I had no idea how much we would get out of this trip,” Dr Rauh told Lieve Vanden Berghe, Vice–President International Marketing at DJO, when she picked them up from the airport.

“Every moment was packed, starting at 5:30 in the morning and going on ‘til late into the evening. Having never visited Europe before, it was fascinating to meet like-minded colleagues and to gain an understanding of their specialist expertise and techniques from a European perspective. Seeing the various cultures and priorities in national sports across the different borders, we were not only treated to some very exciting live games, but also visited their sports clubs and medical centres, met the teams and made new professional contacts and sure lifelong friends. We also observed our colleagues perform a number of procedures. All in all it was a great experience and we really appreciate both the input of our hosts, EFOST and the support of DJO.” Both Dr Wind and Dr Rauh agreed they will definitely be returning for the Brussels meeting in 2010.

Dr Rauh went on to present his “Viewpoint on the Double Bundle ACL Reconstruction”, while Dr Wind presented on “PCL Injuries in Athletes”.  Both lectures were very well received.

Dr Rauh and Dr Wind work at the State University of New York at Buffalo, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. They are part of University Sports Medicine, which is a group of seven Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Orthopaedic Surgeons who provide care to professional athletes along with “Weekend Warriors” in Western New York, Southern Ontario, and Northern Pennsylvania www.djoglobal.eu Departament of orthopaedic Surgery

The EFOST board and members were delighted that the Fellowship had proved so successful and are looking forward to nominating the next Fellowship, which will be taking the winners from Europe to USA.

STOP PRESS!

Please note that European applications may be made for the US tour by emailing Dr Huylebroek direct at jose@sportsmedchirec.be. Applicants must be orthopaedic surgeons under 40 years. Selection will be based upon publications in the sports medicine field and the applicant’s role as a team physician. The US tour will end in Las Vegas at the AOSSM specialty day (during the AAOS meeting in February 2009) when the US sports season is in full swing.
