First Live Biomechanics Demo at BASEM

The British Association of Sports Exercise Medicine (BASEM) this year (8-10 October, 2008) saw the first live demonstration of the biomechanics of foot and knee orthoses using the latest biomechanics equipment and state of the art modeling which was set up near the conference venue in Brighton. This was made possible by the linking of the DJO UK team, Professor Jim Richards (University of Central Lancashire) and the University of Worcester’s Motion Analysis Research and Rehabilitation Centre (MARRC) led by Joe Bevins.

MARRC’s unique mobile laboratory includes an eight-camera Vicon motion capture system and force platform and is able to bring the motion capture and biomechanical analysis to any location.

Professor Richards led three workshops in the mobile laboratory which investigated the nature of the control mechanisms on the foot and how the foot may be modeled in multiple segments to show the benefits of the Podalux, DonJoy's post-bunionectomy shoe , and the three dimensional control of the knee that can be gained by using both rigid and soft bracing.

Professor Richards explained: “The laboratory based workshops were a perfect complement to the more formal lectures delivered on the benefits of orthotic management of the foot, ankle and knee, giving delegates a unique insight into how data can be collected and interpreted.”
