World Experts on Patellofemoral Pain meet ISAKOS: John Fulkerson, M.D. reports | Autumn 2007
Just before the May 2007 International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) meeting in Florence, Italy, DJO, in collaboration with the Patellofemoral Foundation sponsored a day-long meeting to focus on the difficult topic of “Patellofemoral Pain”.
World experts on the topic assembled in a closed forum and shared current concepts ranging from pain resulting from multidirectional instability of the patella to patellofemoral arthritis. Psychological and gender factors affecting anterior knee pain were discussed as well as basic mechanisms leading to pain.
The symposium raised many questions, more than answers, and prompted the group to propose later meetings to further delve into the complexities of this topic. Given the experience and academic commitment of the faculty, the level of discussion raised hopes of new and improved treatment alternatives. At the conclusion of the meeting, presentations were collected by DJO. Some of these have been placed on the Patellofemoral Foundation website and can be accessed readily there under the topic “education”.
Follow up meetings are planned at the March 2008 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons meeting and at ESSKA 2008 in Porto, Portugal.
John P Fulkerson, M.D.
