Encore Medical, L.P. joins DJO and becomes DJO Surgical

We are delighted to announce that as part of our merger with ReAble Therapeutics in November 2007, Encore Medical, the global supplier of reconstructive total joint implants for the hip, knee and shoulder has been renamed DJO Surgical.

Surgical implants have been the focus of Encore's product development since its formation in April 1992, when several executives with significant experience in the orthopaedics industry merged with a small equipment manufacturer of orthopaedic implants and related instruments. Encore’s first product, the Foundation® Knee System, was introduced in Europe in late 1992 and in the United States in February 1993. They also obtained registration for this product in Japan, where sales began in late 1994. Since then they have developed over 100 additional orthopaedic total joint products, trauma products, spinal products, to meet the wide-ranging needs of patients and surgeons around the world.

Their collaboration with experienced orthopaedic surgeons on design development, new product testing and clinical input has helped them to develop leading edge, proprietary patented devices such as the 3DKneeTM Total Knee System, KeramosTM Ceramic-on-Ceramic Acetabular Hip  system , X-alt™ Highly Crosslinked Polyethylene and the Reverse® Shoulder Prosthesis.

John Winslow VP, International, DJO Surgical added: “DJO Surgical is committed to bringing high quality orthopaedic products to the marketplace to meet the demands of the global medical community. We will continue to design and acquire technology to assemble complete, high-quality, competitively priced product lines.”

The name of DJO Surgical will now become synonymous with both our companies’ existing hallmarks of solution creation and provision, and ground breaking innovation and, most importantly, improved patient management and care.

DJO's distinguished history, so familiar to orthopaedic surgeons, and our combined ability to provide surgeons and patients with total operative and post-operative solutions, will enhance the overall physician and patient experience. DJO Surgical will enable us to build upon this total-patient approach to the market.

“Our mission at DJO is to improve the quality of life of the people who use our products, whether they are trying to prevent injuries or rehabilitate from surgery, injury or degenerative disease,” said Les Cross, DJO’s CEO. “Encore Medical exemplifies our mission and has done an excellent job building its surgical business through a dedicated team of professionals that are committed to excellence from new product development to customer service.

DJO Surgical’s international team is part of the International DJO team, lead by Stephen Murphy, President of DJO International, and will continue to be headed up by John Winslow VP International Surgical supported by and Kristin Barnebey, Manager, International Marketing, based in Austin, Texas.
