The world of Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery has come full circle!
By Dr Michael Lutz MBBS(Qld) FRACS(Orth)
“In 2001, Mr James Calder travelled to Brisbane, Australia to undertake Orthopaedic sub-specialty training in Foot and Ankle Surgery. He completed Fellowship training with Dr Terry Saxby at the Brisbane Foot and Ankle Centre before returning to the United Kingdom to commence his own Consultant Orthopaedic practice specialising in Foot and Ankle Surgery.

In 2007, I completed the circle, leaving Brisbane to undertake a Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery with Mr Calder at The Hampshire Foot and Ankle Centre and the North Hampshire NHS in Basingstoke and the The Sports Orthopaedic Centre in London. The Fellowship is generously funded by DJO. In July 2008, after completing another Fellowship with Dr Mark Myerson in Baltimore, USA, I will return to Brisbane to commence a Consultant Orthopaedic practice specialising in Foot and Ankle Surgery at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital. |
In the years since his time in Brisbane, Mr Calder has developed a vibrant practice
www.foot-ankle.co.uk which caters for all aspects of Foot and Ankle pathology in all forms of potential patients. An afternoon’s clinic would encompass anything from a professional footballer’s fractured metatarsal to a retired farmer’s arthritic ankle or a lady’s bunions and hammer toes. This variety was also reflected in our surgical lists.
The benefits of being Mr Calder’s Fellow were numerous. Having emersed myself in his clinics and operating theatre, I am now fully equipped with his “secrets” and feel confident that applying the skills I have learnt will benefit my patients in Brisbane. I was also able to embrace the “Fellowship” in the full context of its meaning. Working in both North Hampshire and London I was well placed to meet other Surgeons and Physicians. This not only broadened my Orthopaedic and Medical exposure but created an international network that will hopefully lead to both educational and social dialogue in the future. The relative proximity, compared to Brisbane, of Hampshire to geographical, historical, architectural and other attractions within the UK and Europe meant that my Fellowship also extended beyond Orthopaedics.
Clinical and scientific research is another facet of Mr Calder’s work and I enjoyed being able to contribute. I am hopeful that we can use the knowledge we gain from our studies to improve outcomes for our and other Surgeon’s patients.
Thankfully, the generosity of Orthopaedic Industry companies, like DJO, made my Fellowship possible. I would like to thank DJO and Mr Calder for their support in providing this opportunity.”
